The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, is one of the most required walks by our visitors, for the cultural and natural biodiversity that this landscape beauty possesses in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
What is the Inca Trail itinerary to Machu Picchu?
Day 01: Cusco – Km. 82 – Huayllabamba
Pick up from your hotel at 7.00 to 7.30 by our private bus and then head to Piskacucho (2700 masl) community known as Km. 82 where you pass the train railroad Cusco to Machu Picchu. Starting our walk from this point we will cross the bridge and walk along the left bank of the Urubamba River that flows northeast of the Sacred Valley.
After passing through some flat ternazas, we will arrive at Miskay (2800 masl) and then ascend and finally see the Inca city of Patallacta (2750 masl) then we will continue our Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Along the valley created by the Kusichaca River, gradually climbing up to our first Wayllabamba camp (3000 masl) where we will see the most spectacular views of the Vilcanota River, on the opposite side of the River of Urubamba You can see the impressive Nevado de Veronica (5832 masl) where you cannot calculate the diversity of flora and fauna that can be found in the area.
Day 02: Huayllabamba – Warmiwañusca – Pacaymayu
This day we will get up at approximately 6:00, after enjoying the Inca Trail Breakfast We will start our hike the most difficult of the day, the hike consists of a hasty and narrow climb (9 km). Throughout this climb the landscape will change from Sierra to Puna (a dry and high area with little vegetation). At the moment we arrive at the first step of the mountain known as Abra de Warmihuañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass) we will be able to observe llamas and domestic alpacas that graze on the Ichu, one of the few plants that grow at that altitude. We will also cross through an area of the forest where various kinds of animals live, such as sparrows and the Andean bear or Spectacled bear. We advise that on this day carry candies, chocolates and coca so that the high level of sugar is maintained to counteract the altitude. Immediately after the passage we will descend to the Pacaymayu Valley (3600 masl) where we will camp after 6 hours of excursion.
Day 03: Pacaymayu – Chaqicocha – Wiñayhuayna
It is the most interesting and impressive day of our Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, due to the number of archaeological sites that we will visit and receive more information from our guide. From Pacaymayu we will go up to the second step El Abra de Runkurakay (3970 masl). In the middle of the morning we will visit the archaeological complex of the same name, this site is located at 3800 meters above sea level, it consists of a small oval structure that was created for having responded to the purpose of a watchtower.
After passing the pass we will descend to Yanacocha (Laguna Negra) and we will enter the cloud-forest to finally reach Sayacmarca (3624 meters above sea level). This is a beautiful complex made of a semicircular construction with various levels, narrow streets, liturgical sources, patios and irrigation canals. Continuing through an easy climb, we will reach the third step El Abra de Phuyupatamarca (3700 masl).
Throughout our walk we will be able to appreciate the magnitude of the ancient art of the Incas and see the rocks that fill the ravines in perfect order. We will continue our walk and then go through an Inca tunnel and reach the aforementioned step. This is one of the most complete and best preserved archaeological complexes found at the highest point of the mountain. Phuyupatamarca means “the cloud over the city” from where we can observe a sophisticated complex and composed of the water fountains with solid foundations and with impressive views of the Urubamaba river along which we will continue ascending towards Wiñayhuayna (2700 masl). On this site we will find a cottage with a restaurant, a bar and rooms with bathroom and hot showers.
Five minutes from the campsite is the Wiñayhuayna archaeological complex consisting of an agricultural center with numerous terraces of religious and urban.
Day 04: Wiñayhuayna – Machu Picchu – Cusco
This day we will get up at 4:00 in the morning to leave WINAYHUAYNA to the WWW WAYNA WINAYWAYNA Machu picchu indicated we will ascend towards the Intipunhu or Puerta del Sol. The excursion will take us approximately one hour, and then walk on the flat stones that is on the edge of the cliffs of the mountain where we can observe the sunrise over the city of Machu picchu.
From Intipunku we will descend towards Machu Picchu arriving in 40 minutes and then head to the control point where we can store our belongings, we immediately head towards the city Inca where we will have a guide of approximately two hours.
Then you will have a free time to walk around the citadel or climb Huaynapicchu mountain from where one can experience spectacular views of valleys and mountains surrounding the Citadel of Machu picchu Or visit the Temple of the Moon and the fabulous Inca Bridge. In the afternoon we will go down to the town of Aguas Calientes where you can visit the thermal baths to relax after having walked for 4 days. Here we will deliver your return train ticket to the city of Cusco, arriving approximately 8:30 at night.
